1.3 Using a Magnifying Glass
Equipment
1. 1 magnifying glass
2. A glass bottle with 4-5 fruit flies, both male
and female, captured inside
Do you know how to use
Instructions a magnifying glass?
1. Study the exterior characteristics of the fruit flies by
just looking and then draw the files in your notebook.
2. Observe the exterior characteristics of the fruit flies
using a magnifying glass and then draw the files in
the same notebook.
3. Compare the characteristics of the files that have
been observed by just looking and using a magnifying
glass and then summarise in the same notebook.

Is using a magnifying glass to study characteristics of animals different from just looking
and how?
How does a magnifying glass magnify an object?
What are the characteristics of the torsos of the observed fruit flies?
How many pairs of wings do the observed fruit flies have?
How are male and female fruit flies different from each other?
Summarize the result of this experiment.
Describe the benefits of a magnifying glass.
A magnifying glass is used to magnify small
things, such as small insects, fingerprints and palm
lines, small characters, or small jewelries, that are
barely invisible to human eyes only. If there are more
details of smaller unicellular organisms to be observed,
a magnifying glass will not be able to magnify these
things clearly. What kind of tools should be used to
observe organisms that are not visible to human eyes?
